Requirements:

American Legion Oratorical Contest
The objective of the contest is to instill a greater understanding and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States among high school students.  Other objectives of the contest include leadership development, the strengthening of speaking ability, and inducement of study in preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
All contestants must be bona fide students, under the age of twenty on the date of the National Finals contest, who are presently enrolled in a high school commencing with grade 9 and terminating with grade 12.
The subject to be used for the prepared oration in the Oratorical Contest must be on some phase of the Constitution of the United States.  The same subject and oration used in the local contest must be used in the national contest.
THE PREPARED ORATION MUST BE THE ORIGINAL EFFORT OF EACH CONTESTANT AND MUST NOT TAKE UP LESS THAN EIGHT MINUTES OR MORE THAN TEN MINUTES FOR DELIVERY.  IT MUST BE DELIVERED IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
Where quotations are used they must be indicated as such.  If quotations are more than ten words in length, the author's name must be given on the manuscript and cited orally.
American Legion Post #186 of Independence presents scholarships to the winners of the local oratorical contest in the following amounts:

$1,000 for first place
$500 for second place
$300 for third place

1st place contest winner must continue to represent the post at higher levels of competition (regional, state etc.) in order to claim award money.

Award money will be dispersed to the student after completion of one semester of full-time college coursework and proof of good academic standing.  A check will be made out to the student and the college.

FFA Alumni Other Local 3/1/2018 Varies
Requirements:

The Independence FFA  Alumni annually awards a scholarship to agriculture & FFA students, with preference to those who are going to college majoring in an agriculture-related area and pursuing a career connected with agriculture.  The FFA Old-Timers review the application and have the right to accept or reject any and all applications.  The application is due March 1 to Mr. Hovell.

Must enroll in six or more Western credits.  The selected student will be awarded $500 to their Western student account during the fall semester.

It is worth $2,250 a year for up to 3 years.

Criteria include:
Must be pursuing a degree at a Technical College.  Must have taken at least 3 courses in Business Education, Agriculture, or Technical Education.  Must have been an FFA members. GPA

Amount: $500.00

Month/year of graduation from High School: Any year

Grade point average required: 3.0 overall or B maintained at time of application

Financial need: Will be considered

Intended career and/or major: Must be pursuing a career in a Wildlife-related science, such as biology, botany, natural resources, etc. and not a physical science like chemistry or physics.

Intended school: Any accredited four year college or university, or a two-year campus which is part of a larger system or accredited technical college.

Personal characteristics: The W.T.A. is looking for a student who is successful in life, who has developed a strong sense of discipline, an ability to lead and motivate others, and possess a well rounded character.  They must be selfless of their time and talent to others.  These are some of the characteristics Michael Abrahamson exhibited.

Work history: Will be considered

Extra-curricular activities: Will be considered

Full or part time student: Minimum of 12 credits per semester

Time limit for use of money: Must be used within one year of the annual Wisconsin Trappers Association Spring Meeting in March.

Awards:

Schedule of payment: $500 upon completion of first semester and proof of registration for second semester and evidence of a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Eligibility if other scholarships are received: May be awarded regardless of other scholarships/

Naming of alternate by Selection Committee: If recipient decides not to go to college, the money will be awarded to an alternate.

Other information: The Wisconsin Trappers Association is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization dedicated to: Conserving Wisconsin's Fur Resources, Preserving Trappers' Rights, Educating Trappers, Increasing Public Awareness of Trapping Issues and Benefits, Continuing Our Fur Trade Heritage

Preferences: Preferences will be given to applicants whose parents/guardians have been and are currently members of the Wisconsin Trappers Association.

 Wings Over Wisconsin is committed to providing and maintaining wildlife habitat. We, therefore, feel that education is an important area to be involved with. With this in mind, this year we will be giving 1-4 scholarships of $750.00 each for area students. We will be accepting applications from each area school and select the top recipients of the award.
